Carbon honors farmer for dedication, preservation efforts
It takes time, dedication and the love for the land to be a farmer.
On Thursday, the Carbon County Commissioners recognized one farmer who has dedicated his life working the land, as well as nearly 40 years of his life helping to preserve land for future farming generations.
Richard W. Fedor of Palmerton received a resolution honoring him for the last 35 years, promoting the benefits of land preservation and working family farms as an important feature to help the county, community and surrounding areas by providing food.
Fedor, who was present at the meeting, is a lifelong farmer and professional truck driver. He also was integral in the preservation of his 180 family farm in 2016 and was the driving forward in the establishment of the Carbon County Agricultural Land Preservation Board and Farm Preservation Program.
According to the resolution, “As a testament to his dedication, Richard W. Fedor has contributed expertise and leadership as the chairman, and previous vice chairman, of the Farmland Preservation Board, ensuring that the voices of local farmers are heard and their needs are addressed.”
In addition, he was also instrumental in helping the Open Space Advisory Board, which he is a member, run a successful campaign regarding a $10 million bond referendum vote on the ballot. The referendum passed with 82.7% of voters agreeing to the bond, which aims to preserve and conserve land.
Fedor is a three-tour veteran of the Vietnam War and is an inspiring model for future generations, the resolution states.
The board thanked Fedor for being a champion for the agricultural community and for having the commitment to the county and country.
“We really commend you,” Commissioner Wayne Nothstein said.
“I’m honored to present this,” Commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko added.
Fedor thanked the county and all of the boards he has served on, as well as Dennis DeMara, Dan Kunkle and Anna Shigo for their dedication to the preservation of Carbon County’s farms and natural beauty.
He didn’t talk about his accomplishments, instead focusing on the important work Shigo is doing with the Open Space program. She is currently visiting each municipality to talk about open space funding that is available.
