Monday is deadline for Schuylkill tax review

Monday is the deadline to apply for a hearing into the new property tax assessments assigned to properties in Schuylkill County.

Tim Barr, of Vision Government Services — the company that is doing the current Schuylkill County reassessment — told the county commissioners on Wednesday the appeal hearings to three-person boards of county citizens have begun.

“There are six appeal boards of three people each,” Barr said. “We have 2,000 appeals scheduled so far.”

Barr urged anyone coming in for an appeal hearing to have some kind of evidence — even pictures — to support why the new tax valuation is too high.

“Your ability to pay has nothing to do with it,” Barr said, “Just tell us about your property. What makes your property unique? Take pictures to show the board. You have to show proof why the reassessment is wrong.”

Barr said county residents can apply online, or by coming into the reassessment office in person, If the request is mailed in, it has to be postmarked by 4 p.m. Monday, Barr said.

“If you don’t meet the deadline, you’ll have to wait to appeal in 2026 for the 2027 tax year,” Barr said.

If the resident is not happy with the outcome of the hearing, they can appeal to Schuylkill County Common Pleas Court.

“But you will need legal counsel, and a property appraisal, which are not needed for this appeal hearing,” Barr said.

There is legislation in Harrisburg now that would require reassessment every five years, Barr said.

“Schuylkill County has not had a reassessment in 30 years,” Barr said. “That’s why this reassessment is so expensive.”

On Wednesday, the commissioners voted to appoint the following to serve on those boards at $20 per hour: Jane and Brian McQuillan, West Penn Township; Jo Anna Shovlin, North Union Township; Vince Lutchkus, Minersville; Sharon Lee Sborz, Saint Clair, and Joseph Peters, Schuylkill Haven.
