For now, the nearly new sign on First Street in Lehighton that marks Fay’s Drugs will not change.

But the two-month-old Fay’s store may soon have a new name, along with 27 other Fay’s in Pennsylvania.

Thrift Drug, a subsidiary of the J.C. Penney Co., recently announced its plans to purchase Fay’s, Inc., for about $285-million in stock, giving Penney’s a larger chunk of the drug store industry.

There are 27 Fay’s stores in Pennsylvania that operate where a Thrift Drug store already exists. The company’s headquarters are located in Liverpool, New York.

Thrift has a store in the Carbon Plaza Mall.
