Police take armed man in custody in Lehighton

The Lehighton Borough Police Department responded to a report of a man with a handgun Tuesday afternoon in the borough.

Borough police Chief Troy Abelovsky said that at 4:35 p.m., police responded to the 400 block of Bridge Street for a report of a 26-year-old suicidal man armed with a firearm.

Abelovsky said the suspect had originally left a suicide note and walked away from the residence.

He said as police units were responding to the area, officers were informed that the suspect had returned to the residence and was sitting in the porch area.

Abelovsky said information relayed from the original caller stated that the suspect was still armed with the handgun and believed to be in his front right pocket.

He said officers arrived on location and began to set a perimeter and close Bridge Street when the man was encountered on the west side patio, outside the residence.

Abelovsky said the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The gun was secured and the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“By our agencies working together, officers were able to bring this critical incident under control safely where no persons were injured and subject was provided the needed medical attention,” Abelovsky said. “Lehighton Borough Police Department appreciates the assistance by the following agencies: Franklin Township Police, Mahoning Township Police and Palmerton Police Department.”
