Pig roast Saturday
A pig roast benefiting Austin’s Blue Line (an organization focused on suicide awareness and prevention) will be held from 2-5 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.
Rebate deadline
The deadline for Property Tax/Rent Rebate for applicants 65 or older, widows/widowers 50 or older, or 18 or older with a disability has been extended to Dec. 31.
The amount to be issued is based on the applicant’s annual income, which must have been $45,000 or less in 2024.

Paddling trip
Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is offering an overnight Delaware River Paddling Trip on Aug. 19.
It entails a leisurely 20-mile canoe trip along the Delaware River and includes canoe or kayak rental, four meals, transportation, river interpretation and a fun time. Camping gear, snorkels and dry bags also available.

Scholarship news
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency is hosting no-essay scholarships for $2,500 through its PA Forward and Keystone Student Loan programs.
The scholarship sweepstakes is for college students, graduate students and their parents for the 2025-26 academic year who opt in to receive communications from PHEAA through Dec. 15. The sweepstakes is only open to Pennsylvania residents.

Hoagie sales
Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is taking orders for 8-inch hoagies with chips through Aug. 24.
People can choose from turkey, ham or Italian.
Orders must be prepaid. Order forms are available at the church office or through the church’s website or Facebook page.
Pickup times are Sept. 6 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. or on Sept. 7 after the 10:30 a.m. worship service until noon.
Proceeds will benefit Zion’s Willing Workers.
Saturday concert
The Effort UMC Pavilion will be filled with music Saturday when the Kings of Queen Street present their concert at 6 p.m. after a light fare dinner is served at 5:30 p.m.
A free-will offering will be collected for the band.
Families and friends are reminded to bring lawn chairs for their own use.
Sunday supper
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, is holding its Community Supper this Sunday, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Another one will be held Aug. 24.
SFRC requests
The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC is requesting donations of juice boxes, snacks and lunch supplies — all things for back to school time.

PVEN lunches
The Free Summer Lunch Program is ongoing at the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network. It will run through Aug. 14 from 8-10 a.m.
It is being held at the PVEN Food Pantry and Clothing Closet at 2334 Route 209, Sciota.
Families will receive five days worth of shelf-stable lunches for each child up to 18 years of age. Young people over 18 who are enrolled in school programs for persons with disabilities are also eligible.
There are no residency or income requirements.

Free dog training
The Chestnuthill Township Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a free dog training session from 11 a.m.-to 1 p.m. Aug. 16, by David with University of Pets, at the West End Regional Park on Merwine Hilltop Road.

Two youth groups
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church hosts two youth groups for children ages 5-12.
The boys group, Blue Knights Boys’ Club, and the girls club, Little Flowers Girls’ Club, meet concurrently from 4:40-6 p.m. one Friday a month, though in separate rooms of the church hall.
Both groups learn about a different virtue through the lives of Catholic saints, scripture, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Boys earn a crusader badge for their work, while girls earn a flower badge.
There is a nominal fee to cover the cost of member books and craft supplies. Families are asked to sign up before Aug. 31.
Snow removal bids
Effort UMC is seeking snow removal bids for the 2025-26 season. Anyone seeking more information can call the church secretary at 570-629-1890.
All proposals will be presented to the church’s Trustees by the Sept. 8 meeting.
Flea market set
Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, 1086 Weir Lake Road, will hold an all-day flea market on Aug. 16. Proceeds benefit the Building Project Fund.
The church requests that the following guidelines be observed by all who donate sale items, which can be dropped off 7:30-8:30 a.m. the day of the sale: no items related to witchcraft; no smoking paraphernalia; and no alcohol.

Holistic fair
A holistic fair for the Ronald McDonald Houses along with the Masonic Lodge is being held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 28, as hosted by Healing Hands, at the Barger Lodge site at 2720 Rimrock Road, Stroudsburg.
The event will include vendors, practitioners, tricky tray, kids craft table and a hot tea bar. There is an admission fee.

Winter workers
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is seeking workers for its winter maintenance program, which runs from September through April.
Positions include CDL equipment operators, mechanics, dispatchers, tradesman helpers and semi-skilled laborers. Positions pay between $17.38 and $28.37 per hour.
