Weatherly still seeking bids for Eurana Park project
Weatherly Borough Council tabled fencing bids and will rebid two other contracts for a Eurana Park improvement project.
This is the third time the borough bid the project, which includes building a basketball and pickleball court, a courtyard and handicapped accessible pathways.
The first time, no one bid on the project, even though five firms took specification packets. The second time, the bids came in more than twice the grant amount of $232,820.
The borough then broke down the project into three contracts: earthwork, paving and fencing. It only received bids for the fencing work in that round, borough Manager Harold Pudliner said.
“This is the third time, and we only got bids for fencing,” he said.
The lack of bids for excavating and paving could be due to this being their busy season, or that contractors don’t want to work under the constraints of a federal grant, Pudliner said.
“We have until the end of the year, and we’re not going to give up on this,” he said. “We’re going to keep putting that out (to bid).”
The borough received the grant, which is federal funding through the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, three years ago, Pudliner said.
“I wanted to start the first year,” he said, but state officials explained that the borough would likely being doing paperwork for the grant for the first year or two. “That’s what we were doing. We had an enormous amount of paperwork that had to be done to just move forward on this. But we’re not going to quit. We’re going to keep going.”
Council tabled fencing bids from Rutkoski Fencing Inc. of Swoyersville, $113,840; and Minichi Inc. of Dupont, $86,000. The bids are good for 45 to 60 days, Pudliner said.
Council also authorized Pudliner to rebid, open and award the earthwork and paving portions of the project.
Council would then ratify and formalize any contract awards, which were reviewed by the solicitor and approved by administration.
