Weatherly to start on hiking connector

Weatherly Borough will be putting out bids on the first 900 feet of its walking/hiking trail connection to the Lehigh Gorge State Park, and the 165-mile-long Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Trail.

Council on Monday authorized its manager to seek bids and award contracts for the project.

“We want to move as quickly as we can on this as that grant is running out by October,” borough Manager Harold Pudliner said.

The borough received $2.2 million in grants for the first phase of the trail project, and another $1.7 million in federal funding last year.

Pudliner said they have about $1.4 million or $1.5 million left from the first grant, which has been extended and used for other work on the trail. The borough has been working on permitting, which is a long process.

“We just want to move as quickly as possible on it before winter sets in,” he said.

Butz Street

Council also approved a change to a permanent one-way for Butz Street on Monday.

Butz Street will be one-way between High Street and West Main Street, going north toward West Main.

The change takes effect in five days from approval, and police Sgt. Michael Bogart said officers will enforce it as soon as it’s posted. There will be no grace period, he said.

Other actions

In other business, council:

• Approved a consent on the transfer of ownership of the borough’s garbage hauler, Tamaqua Transfer, to Casella Waste Systems. There will be no change in the borough’s contract, which runs through 2029.

• Rescinded a letter of interest/intent to the state Department of Community and Economic Development. The borough does not need the letter for programs it is interested in at this time, Pudliner said.
