It’s 5 o’clock somewhere at the Carbon fair

No need to travel or check a bag for this beach getaway. This Jimmy Buffett tribute band is bringing the beach to Carbon County, and that “Margaritaville state of mind” with them.

Coming to the Carbon County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 9, Suns of Beaches will be getting everyone’s fins up during their 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. main stage performances.

Playing as Suns of Beaches since 2022, the band of five has a long history working in the Jimmy Buffett music space. Ben Sakmar, the band’s drummer and manager, played with one of the nation’s top Jimmy Buffett impersonators for 11 years. Lead singer Adam Warble played for 18 years.

“When he retired, we said, ‘We’ve got to keep this going,’ ” Sakmar said. “We don’t want this to be the end of our Jimmy Buffett music, so we decided to form the Suns of Beaches, and we’re keeping the party going, as Jimmy instructed us right before he died.”

Sakmar was practically born a Parrothead, with Buffett’s music ingrained in him his whole life. It was a no-brainer, he said, to carry on the musical legacy and now making it their own. Saturday night, Suns of Beaches will be bringing a mix of classic Jimmy Buffett songs and their own original songs

“We’ll transport the audience to a tropical location, wherever they want to go, even if it’s just for the couple of hours that we’re playing. Leave all your worries at home and be prepared to have a good time,” Sakmar said.

Sakmar adds that each performance is carefully crafted and selected to take the audience on a journey, with some personal favorite songs like “Blue Guitar.”

When it comes to getting prepared, Sakmar says it comes down to weekly practices and staying hydrated.

“We have a good time at practices and some practices may be a better time than others,” Sakmar said, “We’ll just putz around with the song and say, ‘Hey, let’s try doing this,’ and see if it sounds good.”

Suns of Beaches is working on releasing their own Jimmy Buffett inspired album, and more live performances are coming up at the Carlisle Theatre. For more information on the band’s events and releases, visit sunsofbeachesband.com.
