An estimated 500 people attended the annual Aviation Day activities held yesterday at the Jacob Arner Memorial Airport, Lehighton R1.
The daylong affair was sponsored by Arner’s Flying Service and the Carbon County Airport Authority.
William Bechtel, chairman of the authority, said a highlight of the program was the landing of “Breezy,” described as a “Wright Brothers type of plane.”
It consists only of a tubular metal frame with no covering, wings off a J-5 Piper aircraft, and a tail fabricated specifically for the plane. The pilot and a passenger are held in the plane only by a seat belt and the aircraft has top speeds of 70 mph.
Piloting the open plane was Marvin Hogue of Upper Black Eddy, a captain for Eastern Airlines.
