Woman fled police, had active warrants
A Danielsville woman with active bench warrants in two counties was apprehended following a traffic stop in Towamensing Township.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Salvador Melo of the Pennsylvania State Police, Lehighton barracks, in the case against Melissa Peters:
At 3:16 a.m. July 13, Melo was on patrol traveling in the area of Fireline Road east of Hemlock Street, Towamensing Township, with Trooper Robert Spezza when he saw an unregistered 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driving over and on the double yellow lane divider.
The registration plate that was on the motorcycle was also bent at an angle that made it difficult to read.
Melo initiated a traffic stop on Fireline Road east of Hemlock Street, but the driver, Peters, 55, who was identified by her DUI suspended Pennsylvania driver’s license, failed to yield to the emergency lights and siren.
Peters drove off at a high rate of speed, crossing into the left lane multiple times as she attempted to keep control of the motorcycle.
She failed to stop at a stop sign and failed to use a turn signal as she turned left onto White Street, before slowing down enough speed for Spezza to apprehend her.
Peters was placed in the front of Melo’s patrol vehicle. She had bloodshot eyes with dilated pupils, and was sweating profusely, court records show.
She related that she had used methamphetamine a couple hours before being stopped, and told Melo that she used a needle to inject the methamphetamine.
She refused a chemical blood test.
At the time of the stop, Peters had active county bench warrants out of Carbon and Monroe counties for her arrest.
She had a used hypodermic needle and a plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine in her front right pocket.
A plastic container with contained THC wax labeled “Drip Diamonds” and a metal grinder with drug residue ere found on the motorcycle.
The substances and paraphernalia were sent to Wyoming Regional Laboratory for analysis.
Peters faces charges on three counts of driving while operating privilege suspended or revoked; and one count each of fleeing or attempting to elude officer, driving under influence of alcohol/controlled substance, flight to avoid apprehension, intentional possession of controlled substance by person not registered, marijuana, and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.
She also faces traffic offenses obscured plate, registration required, operating vehicle without required financial responsibility, reckless driving, careless driving, fraudulent use or removal of registration plate, driving at safe speed, and failure to carry registration.
Peters waived all charges to the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas. She remains incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.
