Area teams compete in A-town Throwdown tourney

NW boys reach playoffs of A-town Throwdown; Lehighton boys, and Palmerton, Tamaqua and Tiger girls also participate

ALLENTOWN — Two weeks after a number of area basketball teams competed in the first major tournament of the summer — the Cedar Beach Bash at the Beach — they hit the outdoor courts for the second tournament — the Allentown Throwdown at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown.

It was primarily played outdoors, while the first tournament was all indoors at Whitehall High School or Elementary School.

The A-town Throwdown ran from Thursday to Sunday with teams playing in pool games to qualify for a postseason type tournament.

Games on Thursday and Saturday were able to be played at Cedar Beach, but Friday and Sunday were moved indoors to Executive Education Charter’s gymnasium due to rain.

Competing on the boys varsity side were Northwestern Lehigh and Lehighton, while on the girls varsity side was Northwestern Lehigh, Palmerton and Tamaqua.

The lone team of the five to advance to the postseason portion of the tournament was the Tiger boys, who fell in overtime of the quarterfinal round of the small school division tournament against Bethlehem Christian on Saturday morning. Prior to that, the Northwestern boys defeated Morris Hills of New Jersey 34-26 and Executive Education 46-42, as both pool play games were on Thursday evening.

“It was a great weekend overall for us,” said Northwestern head coach Pat Wanamaker. “We beat two really good programs, and then came up just short to the team that ultimately won the small school title.

“I’m proud of all the guys for their efforts this weekend.”

The Indians went 1-1 in pool play, defeating North Hunterdon from New Jersey 31-28 on Thursday night, but came out on the wrong end against Bethlehem Christian 49-37 on Friday evening.

While Lehighton competed in the first summer tournament, Northwestern did not, but made the most of its opportunity this past weekend.

“It’s been a good summer so far,” Wanamaker said. “The guys have been in the gym practicing their crafts and trying to better their games.

“We were excited to get out there in this tournament and be competitive against teams we don’t normally get to see, and that’s just what happened.”

On the girls side, the Tigers were 2-1 in pool play, defeating Quakertown 51-5 before dropping a game to Executive Education 37-28 — both on opening night. Northwestern ended its tournament on the right foot by taking down Tamaqua 45-42 Saturday morning.

The Blue Bombers and Raiders both went 1-2 on the weekend in pool play.

Palmerton lost to Dieruff 35-31 on Thursday night, and was downed by Audenried 39-22 Friday before ending the weekend on top with a 25-21 victory over Northampton.

Tamaqua beat Quakertown 49-15 on Friday afternoon, but lost to Executive Education 36-31 later that evening. The Raiders fell to Northwestern 45-42 Saturday morning.
