Children’s benefit

Go Joe 28, benefiting the St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton, will be at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Takeout meals

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, is holding its West End Missions meal at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. It is a takeout meal.

The Community Sunday Supper at 2:30 p.m. Sunday will also be a takeout meal.

Garden of Giving

With the Garden of Giving, near McMichaels on Route 715, being ready to begin harvesting, there is need for more volunteers.

The garden’s board has five new members: Louise Horgan, Abigail David, Kellie Davis, Sarah Pio and Christina Tieg.

The garden can be called at 570-402-1282 or emailed at gardenofgiving@gmail.com. People can also visit the garden’s website at gardenofgiving.org or check out the garden’s page on Facebook for more information on dates at the garden.

In addition, the Garden of Giving is hosting public youth events for those 8-plus and their respective adults from 9:30 a.m.-noon July 26 and Aug. 21. There is a small cost, which includes supplies.

Friday meeting

An Order of the Arrow meeting will take place at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church at 10 a.m. Friday.

Farmers market

The farmers market at Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville is slated to return on Sept. 20 and Oct. 18, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., with several vendors.

The location is behind the church hall.

Applicants sought

Eldred Township is seeking multiskilled applicant(s) to fill a position in the Public Works Department. Applications are available at the municipal building or at www.eldredtwp.org.

Pantry open

Effort UMC’s Supplemental Food Resource Center food pantry will be open from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday.

The pantry is seeking donations of back-to school products such as juice boxes, snacks, lunch supplies, etc.

Praise service

Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church invites folks to come to its praise service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Kunkletown bingo

St. Matthew’s Laymen’s Fellowship is hosting a cash and gift card bingo on Sunday, with doors opening at noon. Bingo begins at 1 p.m.

Food and drinks will be sold by Laymen’s Fellowship, with proceeds supporting repairs and updates to the church and picnic grove.

Summer picnic

Effort UMC will hold its annual church family picnic, sponsored by Effort’s Women’s Group, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the pavilion. People should bring lawn chairs.

Church family members are asked to sign up before Thursday if they wish to bring a side dish or dessert.

Polk meeting

The Polk Township Board of Supervisors will hold its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the municipal building in Kresgeville.

Camp reminder

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers Summer Day Camp including: “Get in Touch with Nature” for ages 7-10 either July 28-Aug. 1 or Aug. 4-8. Camps are from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. with an additional fee for late pickup. Camp registration is limited, so call 570-629-3061 or email dflint@monroecountypa.gov before paying to ensure room is still available.

Meet the artists

A meet and greet will be held at the Art Gallery at Kettle Creek from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Aug. 2 to meet artists from the Pocono Mountains Art Group.

The display of work will be at the gallery through Aug. 29. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and will be open Saturdays on Aug. 2 and 9, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Rosary bonfire

The families and friends of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate a Family Rosary Bonfire at the fire pit behind the pavilion from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 3. It will include S’mores, games and the rosary.

Participants should bring a chair and/or a blanket for all in the individual groupings.

Hoagie sale

Zion Lutheran Church will take orders for 8-inch hoagies with chips from Aug. 3-24.

People can choose from turkey, ham or Italian and customize via add-ons with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar or mayo.

Orders must be prepaid. Order forms are available at the church office or through the church’s website or Facebook page.

Pickup times are Sept. 6 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. or on Sept. 7 after the 10:30 a.m. worship service until noon.

Proceeds will benefit Zion’s Willing Workers.

Pavilion concert

Effort UMC has announced that the next concert in the pavilion will be held on Aug. 9 with The Kings of Queen Street.

A light fare dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. The concert starts at 6 p.m. with a free-will offering for the band.

Attendees are reminded to bring lawn chairs.

Blue Line benefit

The American Legion in Gilbert is hosting an Austin Blue Line Benefit (an organization focused on suicide awareness and prevention) pig roast from 2-5 p.m. Aug. 9.

PVEN June statistics

Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network’s free Summer Lunch Meals Program began on June 12. Since then, 1,722 children have been served, and the number of lunches since then has reached 8,610.

The statistics for the PVEN’s four pantries for June include: Food Pantry — 285 families (883 individuals) served; Clothing Closet — 50 families (227 individuals) served; Diaper Pantry — 108 families served; Menstrual Hygiene Pantry — 200 individuals served.

PVEN current needs

The PVEN has a list of current needs.

The school needs include: spiral notebooks, filler paper, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, crayons, markers and colored pencils. Also needed are sneakers and socks for boys, girls, men and women.

In underwear, the request is for hipsters for girls and women, and boxer briefs for boys and men.

Lunch boxes and lunch bags are needed for students grades K through 12.

Personal care items needed include toothbrushes, floss, deodorants, body wash, etc.

The Clothing Closet requests donations of body wash, lotion and deodorant; dental care products and razors; household cleaning supplies, sheets, blankets, towels and washcloths.

The Diaper Pantry could use bladder pads and adult-sized pull-ups; baby formula and baby food and bed protector pads.

Supplies can be dropped off by Aug. 15 at the PVEN Clothing Closet at 2338 Route 209, Sciota.

Paddling trip

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is offering an overnight Delaware River Paddling Trip on Aug. 19.

It entails a 20-mile canoe trip along the Delaware River and includes canoe or kayak rental, four meals, transportation and river interpretation. Camping gear, snorkels and dry bags also available.

Grocery bingo set

Operation: Touch of Home is seeking participation in its grocery bingo fundraiser being held at 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building. The purpose is to help raise funds to offset our shipping costs as well as supplement essential and fun items to send to our soldiers.

Sponsors of the bingo games are needed; as well as donations of raffle items for a tricky tray.

Any donation made will be recognized at the event, and a receipt will be provided for donations.
