Officials: Man owes $300K in taxes
A Jim Thorpe business owner is accused of failing to pay nearly $300,000 in income taxes over several years.
Ryan Yost, 53, owner of Yosty’s Auto Service Inc. on the 1100 block of North Street, has been charged with multiple tax-related offenses following an investigation by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General and the Department of Revenue.
Investigators say Yost failed to remit $51,884 in sales tax and $7,810 in state income tax that had been withheld from employees’ paychecks.
Records also show he did not file personal income tax returns for 2022 and 2023.
The Department of Revenue has filed 34 liens totaling more than $164,000 against Yost’s business for unpaid sales and use tax.
Additionally, Yost personally owes over $130,000 stemming from assessments issued in 2018, 2021 and 2024.
Another lien for $32,025 was also filed against him as a responsible party for the business.
Yost has also been cited repeatedly for operating without a valid sales tax license.
He pleaded guilty and paid fines after citations were filed in January and June 2022, and again in February and May 2024.
Since 2015, the Department of Revenue has mailed 91 tax assessment notices to Yosty’s Auto Service.
None were appealed. The business’s sales tax license has been expired since November 2022, court records say.
Field agents tried several times to contact Yost and bring the business into compliance.
On some occasions, they were told he was recovering from knee surgery or too busy at the shop to attend scheduled hearings. Despite being found guilty and fined, Yost continued to operate the business.
Yost and his wife, Kerri, are listed as co-owners of the business.
While Ryan is the president and manages operations, Kerri is listed as secretary but is no longer actively involved.
The couple also owns RK Yost Properties LLC, which owns the building housing the business.
They purchased the former Leffler’s Auto Service in August 2012 for between $640,000 and $670,000.
Yost is facing two counts each of theft for failing to turn over collected funds and for willfully failing to file personal income taxes.
He is currently free on $25,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 30 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz in Jim Thorpe.
