Weissport to recommend EMC candidate

The Weissport Borough Council voted Monday to begin the process to appoint Joseph Flickinger as the borough’s emergency management coordinator.

“I would like to work with council, work with Mr. (Mike) Muffley (borough engineer) in regards to figuring out various mitigation opportunities that we may able to. Because, if we were to apply for any mitigation funds, you need to have something on the hazard mitigation plan,” Flickinger said.

Flickinger has nearly 11 years of experience as an emergency coordinator. He has completed basic, advanced and professional level training through the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, attended the PEMA National Emergency Management Basic Academy, Disaster Infrastructure Management through Texas A & M, as well as professional and advanced professional accreditations through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Flickinger described his basic duties as “anything in regards to the preparedness, planning, preparation, mitigation, response and recover actions for the Borough of Weissport.”

Cheryl Miller, Weissport Borough secretary, will submit a letter of recommendation, at the request of borough council, to Carbon County, which will submit it to PEMA.

Ultimately, the governor will make the official appointment.
