Four area players all-state in softball

Northwestern’s Abby Dunstan and Emma Freeman, along with Marian’s Deanne Pugh were all named to the First Team of the 2025 Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association (PAHSSBCA) All-State team, while the Fillies’ Malina Letcher received Second Team honors.

The battery of Freeman (pitcher) and Dunstan (catcher) was a lethal combination against opposing teams, as the Tiger duo had an outstanding year in helping their club post a 25-3 record, capture a District 11 title and reach the state semifinals.

The two both received First Team honors in Class 4A.

Dunstan, who was named the Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Softball Player of the Year, finished with an impressive .511 batting average, collecting 47 hits in 92 at-bats. Nearly half — 23 — of her hits went for extra bases, including a staggering 11 homers. The junior also added nine double and three triples. She proved to be a run producer, scoring 48 times while also ending the year with 47 RBIs.

In addition to the gaudy numbers above, Dunstan posted an on-base percentage of .566 (drawing 13 walks), a slugging percentage of 1.033 (95 total bases in 92 at-bats) and an OPS of 1.599. She also swiped seven bases without being caught.

Dunstan was also the receiver of Freeman’s pitches.

Freeman, who was the TN/LVHN Player of the Year in 2024, turned in another fabulous campaign — both in the circle and at the plate.

The junior posted a 22-2 record with an ERA of 1.07. In 151 innings, she allowed just 23 earned runs, 96 hits and 56 walks while striking out 212. Opponents hit only .170 against her and she stranded 150 runners on base.

Freeman often helped her own cause, as evidenced by her .430 batting average (34-for-79). She had four doubles and two homers, scoring 35 runs while knocking in 18. She also walked 15 times to finish with a .521 on-base percentage and an OPS of 1.078.

While Marian didn’t have quite the success that Northwestern did as a team, the Fillies did enjoy a solid season, posting a mark of 13-10.

Pugh and Letcher were the key contributors for the Hometown squad, which did qualify for the district playoffs.

Pugh registered a .516 batting average, collecting 33 hits in 64 at-bats. Nine of her hits — seven doubles and two triples — went for extra bases. She scored 35 runs and drove in 25. She had at least one hit in 21 of her team’s 24 games and scored at least one run in 20 games.

The sophomore second baseman also walked 11 times, posting an on-base percentage of .587, and stole six bases. Defensively, Pugh committed only one error in 46 chances for a fielding percentage of .978.

Letcher, meanwhile, also turned in an excellent season. The junior boasted a batting average of .545, going 36-for-66 at the plate with 18 extra-base hits — eight doubles, six triples and four homers. Letcher scored 30 times and posted 35 RBIs.

The Fillies’ shortstop walked six times and had an on-base percentage of .589, a slugging mark of 1.030 and an OPS of 1.619. She also had at least one hit in 21 of 24 games.
