Tamaqua council looks at part-time officer training

Part-time police officers hired by the Borough of Tamaqua aren’t guaranteed to get training on the borough’s dime.

On Tuesday, council approved an “inactive police officer training” resolution prepared by solicitor Anthony Odorizzi.

“We’ve been paying for training of police officers that are on our part-time rolls, that will do one shift a year maybe, and then come and get all the training that we’re paying for,” explained council President Brian Connely during Tuesday’s council meeting.

Council has been trying to figure out a way to put an end to it, he said.

“We kind of really didn’t know how until we really pushed on it and said, ‘Enough’s enough,’ ” Connely said.

The resolution, he said, notes that in order to receive training paid for by the borough, a part-timer has to work a certain amount of hours.

“It basically says you have to do ‘x’ amount of hours before you get ‘x’ amount of training,” according to Connely.

The resolution passed unanimously.

Appointment

In an unrelated matter, council appointed Amy Macalush as borough secretary/treasurer effective immediately.

Macalush will replace Tim Ziegler. She had served as assistant borough secretary/treasurer for a number of years.

Council is seeking someone to fill the assistant borough secretary/treasurer position.

Members also voted to advertise for a water treatment plant operator following the recent retirement of Steve Naylor. The position had been posted in-house, however, no applications were received.

In keeping with personnel, council retained Jaclyn Nalesnik as a full-time utility billing clerk effective July 28, which is the end of her probationary period.
