Schuylkill Co. seeking appeals board members

Schuylkill County residents are still needed to sit on appeal boards for the countywide property tax reassessment.

At last week’s commissioners’ meeting, the commissioners appointed nine more people to the three-person boards — Jarrod Yuskasukas, West Penn Township; Julian Milewski, Ringtown Borough; Brittany Heller, Hegins Township; Chris Melusky, Norwegian Township; Edward Hampford, Pottsville; Maryann Kayes, West Mahanoy Township; Laine Gehres, Branch Township; Lilly Hirsh, Pottsvlle; and Gregory Woll, Pottsville.

Commissioner Barron “Boots” Hetherington asked Christine Zimmerman of the county’s tax assessment office how many people have been appointed to the boards, and how many more are needed.

“We have appointed about 20 people,” Zimmerman said. “We need at least nine more.”

The boards will be hearing the appeals of the new tax valuations calculated by the reassessment in August, September and October at the old Schuylkill Transportation System building inn Saint Clair.

Anyone who is interested in serving on the boards should contact the commissioners.

Recognition for volunteers

Should there be some award program for volunteers?

Melinda Deibert asked the commissioners if volunteers who give a lot of their time to their communities should get some kind of recognition.

Deibert cited a few people, including a fellow regular contributor at commissioners’ meetings, Jeff Dunkel of Palo Alto.

“He has donated a lot of time to Dustin’s Adventureland in Minersville,” Deibert said, “It’s a park for special needs kids, but can be used by anybody. He has donated time to fire companies, getting food for the homeless, These people should be recognized in some form a certificate or a luncheon?”
