It will cost $33.2-million to bore a second tunnel that separates Carbon and Lehigh counties on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
That was the low bid received yesterday when the Turnpike Commission accepted proposals for the work that is expected to begin in September.
Dyckerhoff and Widmann, a prominent West Germany firm, joined the Cameron Construction Company, a company from Pittsburgh in submitting the low bid.
Planned is a two lane, 4,300 foot tunnel adjacent to the existing tunnel to help the flow of traffic from the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia areas to the north and Pocono region.
