GoFundMe started for Saylorsburg man lost home in fire

A Saylorsburg man has lost everything after his home burned to the ground Saturday night.

West End Fire Company Fire Chief Michael Manfre Jr. said firefighters were dispatched at 10:16 p.m. to the home at 145 Old Orchard Dr., Chestnuthill Township.

“The house was fully involved,” Manfre Jr. said. “Eighty percent of the house already fell into the basement (and it) seemed to be burning for quite a while.”

Manfre Jr. said it took firefighters between 30 to 45 minutes to get the fire under control.

He said the only occupant, a man, was home at the time but managed to escape.

Manfre Jr. said he saw the man run down the driveway, and he was later taken by ambulance and treated for unknown injuries.

He said the cause of the fire is unknown, and added that it’s under investigation by a state police fire marshal.

Manfre Jr. said firefighters remained on scene for about four hours due to the remote location of the home.

“It took about 30,000 gallons of water, it all had to be trucked in by tankers,” he said. “We had two fill sites to fill the tankers up, it was a long driveway.”

He said also assisting at the scene were the Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder Fire Department, Polk Township Fire Department, Jackson Township Fire Department, and Lehigh Valley Health Network EMS.

“Given the conditions we had and the steep incline, I think everything went well,” Manfre Jr. said. “No firefighters got hurt.”

Jessica Valderrama of East Moriches, New York, set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for her brother, Sean McDermott.

Valderrama said McDermott woke up to find his room completely filled with smoke and was able to escape just in time.

“Thank God he made it out safely,” Valderrama said. “Unfortunately, by the time the fire department arrived the house was already engulfed in flames.

“Sean has lost everything. To make matters worse, he does not have homeowners insurance. We’re heartbroken, but incredibly grateful that he’s alive.”

Valderrama added she started this GoFundMe “to help Sean get back on his feet.”

“Any amount you can give — big or small — means the world to us. We deeply appreciate all of your love, prayers, and support during this devastating time.”

As of 10 a.m. Monday, $395 of the $2,400 goal had been raised.
