Rt. 309 reopened after rig crashes, dumps over 30,000 lbs. of cheese

State police at the Frackville barracks said Route 309 northbound in Kline Township, near McAdoo, was closed for hours on Saturday after a tractor trailer crashed and dumped its cargo of about 30,000 of cheese.

Police said a 31-year-old man from Nevada was driving the rig southbound, descending the mountain known as the “Mile Hill,” and was negotiating a right curve in the roadway when for unknown reasons it crossed over the raised center divider and entered the northbound lane. It struck and drove through the guardrail and rolled onto its driver’s side, coming to rest approximately 100 feet down a steep embankment.

The operator and a passenger, a 40-year-old man from California, had minor injuries and were able to exit the vehicle on their own, police said.

They said Route 309 northbound was closed for hours until the wreckage was removed.
