Weatherly selects new council member
Weatherly Borough Council on Monday selected a new council member to fill a vacancy left when Councilman Norman Richie stepped up as mayor/council president last month.
Council selected Greg Walters, a candidate for council who had secured nominations on both party’s tickets on the ballot for November’s General Election.
Walters was the first person nominated among three, and council voted 5-1 to seat him. Richie was the lone no vote.
Also nominated for the seat were Joe Thomas, a former councilman, and Susan Danehower, another council candidate who also secured both party’s nominations for the fall.
Walters was not present at Monday night’s council meeting.
Council reorganized last month after filling the mayor’s position. Councilman Jeffery Miller was selected at vice president.
The vacancy for mayor happened when former Mayor Paul Hadzick resigned following an investigation into sexual harassment claims in April. Four borough employees lodged complaints.
The borough, according to its sexual harassment policy, hired Margolis Edelstein, an impartial law firm from Philadelphia, to investigate the allegations and council heard the firm’s report during an April executive session.
Hadzick immediately resigned following that session and council accepted his verbal resignation then, and his written resignation in May.
The borough did not release the results of the investigation, which is being held as confidential, and did not name the four borough employees.
Hadzick has since been charged with driving under the influence, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving without a license. A preliminary arraignment and hearing are scheduled in August.
