Sportsplex offers summer camps

It’s summer, which means kids are off from school.

That also means parents are sure to hear “I’m bored” coming from their little ones’ mouths.

In Nesquehoning, one business is hoping to curb the boredom, introduce a variety of sports and help parents who are still working and need somewhere for their child to go during the day.

Narrow Valley Sportsplex is holding weekly summer youth camps for children from first through eighth grade.

“It’s five days a week all through the summer,” said owner Kathy Reaman, noting that there are both half-day and full-day options for parents to choose from for their children.

“We aim to get the kids as active as they can be,” she said. “They don’t have to be sports oriented. We play sports, do crafts and have instructors here to show the kids different things.”

Sports kids get to try out include basketball, volleyball, pickleball, softball, baseball and soccer.

“They get exposed to all kinds of sports,” Reaman said, “and our goal is they leave here very tired (from being active and having fun.”

Brandon Heffelfinger, director of athletics and recreation programming at Narrow Valley, added that in addition to sports, there are theme weeks, special guests, movie days and more for the kids.

“Most of the weeks have special guest, whether it’s a butterfly farm or a professional basketball player, we have someone new coming in,” Heffelfinger said.

The camps carry a weekly fee; however, Narrow Valley also has some help from Bitfarms Ltd. Bitfarms is a global Bitcoin mining company that builds and manages data center infrastructure for Bitcoin mining.

The company, which recently acquired Stronghold Digital Mining, awarded Narrow Valley a $10,000 grant to use to offset costs for children who would like to attend.

Reaman thanked the company for seeing Narrow Valley’s vision of bringing the community together and providing the much needed support for many children.

She said that to spend the money, Narrow Valley has created a summer program scholarship, which is utilized on an as-needed basis.

Reaman said the goal is to make these camps affordable for everyone.

“We’re splitting it up to make sure the most amount of kids can get the benefit of the camp,” she said, adding that funds are still available.

Room for all camps are still available. They run weekly through Aug. 22; however, the week of June 30 will only be a four-day camp due to the Fourth of July holiday.

“Stop in and come see us,” Reaman said.
