The House of Representatives yesterday passed an appropriations bill that includes $276,000 for the proposed Beltzville Dam on the Pohopoco Creek (Big Creek) in Carbon County.

The proposed dam will be a multi-purpose project designed for flood control, eventual water supply and recreation. It has been assigned top priority on the list of a number of such dams planned for the Delaware River Basin during the next several decades.

Beltzville Dam is expected to extend for about 7 miles along the Pohopoco, and to inundate a number of farms and summer cottages.

The announcement from Washington did not specify whether the $276,000 for the project was for planning or construction, or both.
