Gilbert post office customers in the dark
Customers arriving at the Gilbert Post Office have been left in the dark.
For almost two weeks, there has been no electricity at the 622 Gilbert Rd. office, according to a customer.
There is enough available light during the daytime to see the 800 rented mailboxes, but on dark days customers need to use a flashlight to see.
The lack of power also means that the post office cannot weigh outgoing packages on its electronic scale. It also can’t accept anything other than cash for payment since its credit card reader is down.
An employee restroom is also offline due to the lack of power. Employees must use facilities at a nearby business, and tack a note to the post office door to alert customers of their absence.
The nearest post offices to Gilbert are in Kresgeville, Brodheadsville and Effort.
Paul F. Smith, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, confirmed the lack of power.
“We appreciate our customers patience as we are dealing with an electricity outage in the Gilbert Post Office,” Smith said.
He added that the USPS is not planning to close the office.
State Rep. Jack Rader’s office said someone reached out to the office on Friday afternoon to alert them to the issue.
Rader’s office made calls and then reached out Congressman Rob Bresnahan’s office since it is a federal issue.
The postal service said on Monday that a temporary solution was being put in place for power and water services. As of 4 p.m. Monday, power had not been restored.
