Slatington hears stormwater, steps updates

Michael Waldron, director of project operations for Acela Engineering, updated Slatington this week on the borough’s MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) project and urged residents to help keep local waters clean.

“Stormwater is the water produced when rain, snow or sleet hits the ground,” Waldron said. “The borough has a series of drains, pipes, and water-quality management systems that eventually feed into our lakes, streams and rivers.”

He emphasized the dangers of “illicit discharge” — any runoff entering storm drains that isn’t composed entirely of stormwater.

“Lawn chemicals, pet waste and car fluids can all pollute the water,” Waldron said. “If you see anything going into storm drains that shouldn’t be there, contact the borough office.

“Again, it’s so important to keep our water clean.”

Waldron also said Acela is waiting on final approval from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to put the long-delayed “100 Steps” restoration project out for bids.

The cost could reach $460,000. The borough has secured a $400,000 PennDOT grant for the work.

Borough Manager Roy Hambrecht said PennDOT’s outstanding issues are expected to be addressed by Acela by July 11.

Mayor Jeralyn Schoch said she has reached out to the Lehigh County Historical Society and state Rep. Zach Mako’s office for possible support to cover the funding gap.

Memorial bench delay

Resident Catherine Wieand voiced frustration over a two-year delay in the placement of a memorial bench for her late father at Victory Park.

“I ordered a memorial bench almost two years ago,” Wieand told council. “I came to the council meeting in September 2024 and was told by (former council member) Stevens he would take care of it. Well, my dad has been gone four years this July — and still no bench.”

When Council President David Schnaars asked about the bench, Hambrecht replied that he had no knowledge of it.

Highway crew member Bob Herzog, who was in attendance, confirmed he had the bench.

Hambrecht said he is now coordinating with Wieand for placement.

Meeting change suggested

Councilor Ryan Mayberry suggested changing the Borough’s regular meeting schedule to avoid conflict with Northern Lehigh School Board meetings.

“I know there are residents who would like to attend both,” he said.

Council members agreed it was worth considering, and Schnaars said that it would be discussed at the next committee meeting.

Councilor Ronald Kratz was absent.
