Towamensing tables storage unit plan, elects chief

There was a lengthy discussion during the recent Towamensing Township Board of Supervisors meeting between the board and project manager Neal Metzger regarding Lakeside Self Storage at the corner of Homestead Road and Route 209.

Plans for drainage release was the main issue. One of the requirements of the conditional approval hearing was the need to “grant a drainage easement from the downstream property owner.”

Board Chair Guy Seifert said, “There is no evidence that the downstream property owner was notified” when the plan was resubmitted. A few days later, notice was received that a letter was sent to the neighboring property owner per the ordinance.

Residents of an adjoining tree farm were concerned about where water would go. The ordinance states that if the builder can’t get an easement, they have to build a structure to hold water and naturally let it go to the ground. Various means to do that were addressed, with no agreement between the board and Metzger.

“We added details about stormwater management and landscaping for the 25,000-square-foot building,” Metzgar said. “Roof runoff is considered clear runoff.”

Seifert again responded by asking where that water runoff would go. A back and forth ensued, with no consensus.

After the board examined the physical plans for where runoff and drainage would occur on the property and the different ways to hold the water in the ground without it affecting neighboring properties, a decision was made to table the matter until the July 3 meeting.

In other business:

• Cole George was elected as the new Towamensing Township fire chief, as the former one resigned. George has been with the company for nine years.

• A hearing date was set for Trachsville Hill Solar Farm’s conditional use application for 6 p.m. June 24, unless the 60-day extension is waived, which would mean the hearing would be held on July.

• Semanoff, Ormsby, Greenberg and Torchia LLC were retained as the representatives for labor negotiations.

• Township residents who would like to have a yard sale can go directly to the township office for a permit. Only three permits are permitted per year.

• A quote of $18,500 by Neff’s Masonry was accepted to build 20-22 steps, 8 feet wide, for the ballpark. There will be railings on both sides and a landing in the middle.

• Girl Scout Troop 3991 was thanked for planting flowers and mulching the flower beds at the Township building.

• Thanks were also given for “Government Days” help by Penny Kleintop and Roy Christman, who gave an historical presentation to sixth graders from Towamensing Elementary. The road crew then gave the students a tour of the recycling center and garbage trucks.
