Schuylkill Co. courthouse to reopen Wednesday

The “suspicious device” that caused the shutdown of the Schuylkill County Courthouse late Tuesday morning turned out to be a can of food.

As a result, the courthouse was expected to reopen on a normal schedule today.

The Schuylkill County Emergency Management Agency announced just after 11 a.m. that a suspicious device was found in the courthouse’s upper parking lot. The facility was evacuated and the public was urged to avoid the area.

The Schuylkill County Sheriff’s Office, Pottsville City Police Department, Pottsville Fire Department and Schuylkill County Emergency Management responded to the incident and requested assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police Bomb Squad and K-9 team.

The bomb squad stabilized the situation and K-9 teams cleared the courthouse building and perimeter. It was later discovered that the “device” was a large can of applesauce.

The incident is under investigation.
