Save Carbon County will hold a meeting this week in Nesquehoning regarding a business’ recent permit approval to burn tires at its facility, as well as its plan on bitcoin mining.
The meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center, is to discuss Stronghold Digital Mining Inc.’s plan to create a high-speed computing center at Panther Creek Power Cogeneration Plant off Industrial Road in the borough. The center would use artificial intelligence to create bitcoins, a flyer delivered to residents in the area states.
The flyer also states that this center “will be noisy. It will use massive amounts of electricity and ... gallons of water to cool the computers.”
In addition, Save Carbon County has been monitoring air quality and pollution in the area, because of the Department of Environmental Protection’s recent permit approval of Panther Creek Power’s plan to burn shredded tires in with the waste coal.
The group states that if a person smells burning tires, to call the DEP complaint line at 866-255-5158 and also Save Carbon County at 570-676-2644.
