Temperatures will finally hit the 80s this week
Summer has finally arrived.
After an extended period of winterlike weather, temperatures are expected to rise significantly by midweek.
For those who crave the sunshine and warmer weather, they ought to be stoked by this week’s prospects, according to Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
Kines noted that while 80-degree days have been hard to come by, with just one the entire month of May and a few back in April, it’s about to feel like summer part of this week.
However, he cautioned that one thing we’ll likely have to contend with is some haze in the sky from the wildfire smoke out in central Canada.
“It’s not going to cause any health issues, but it will give the sky a hazy look and enhance the sunrise and sunset, make them a little bit more colorful,” Kines said.
Kines said Tuesday will be sunny with temperatures making a run for 80 degrees, though the sky will take on a hazy look to it from the wildfire smoke.
By Wednesday, he said temperatures ought to get up into the mid-80s, and added we have to deal with the humidity part.
Kines said Thursday appears to be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures getting well up into the 80s.
“Along with that heat, we do run the risk of a thunderstorm during the afternoon or evening,” he said. “It’s not out of the question it may have a little bit of a bite to it, may cause some gusty winds.”
Kines said that on Friday, clouds may begin to set in with a high around 80 and a risk of thunderstorms during the day.
He said conditions could turn cooler over the weekend, as temps drop back into the 70s for highs, with a possible shower or thunderstorm Saturday, while Sunday looks to be nice.
Kines said that while high temperatures this time of year should typically be in the mid-70s, with lows in the mid-50s, things weren’t quite up to par the month of May.
“Especially the second half, we had the jet stream that was unusually far south this time of year,” he said. “You get into that chillier air mass, weather systems were moving around rather slowly during the month, once you get into a chilly pattern, you’re pretty much locked into it; and unfortunately we were on the wrong side of things and had to endure some pretty chilly weather.”
However, while Kines said May was perceived as a chilly month, it was only about a degree-and-a-half to two degrees below normal, and noted we had over 10 inches of rain in the month of May.
With the uprising of temperatures on the way, the sound of lawn mowers are likely to be more prevalent over the next several days.
Kines simply urged everyone to enjoy the shift in the weather pattern.
“Obviously we’re not used to it; if you have to do outdoor work Wednesday or Thursday, you might want to take it a little easier, just because we’re not used to warmth and humidity,” he said. “People need to enjoy this week; it’s well deserved after what we’ve gone through after the past couple.”
