Tamaqua community day has fishing derby, fun run, rides, more
Fun for the entire family is on tap Saturday for Tamaqua’s first Community Day scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Owl Creek Reservoir.
The free admission event, organized by the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce, will feature entertainment and outdoor activities for all ages and interests.
There will be games for children, live music, bike tours, the kickoff of a fishing derby, food trucks, a beverage tent and a 5K Run.
Registration for the 9 a.m. Fun Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m. Walkers will complete a lap around the reservoir and runners will complete two laps. There is no fee, and the top 10 finishers will receive a free drink or food item.
The Kid Zone will have arts and crafts, story time, scavenger hunts, games and fun for children and will be held during the entirety of the event. A live broadcast with Magic 105.5 airs from 9 to 11 a.m., and the beverage tent opens at 10 a.m.
A Corn Hole Tournament begins at 11 a.m. There is a fee per team, and a cash prize will go to the winners.
Naturalist “Porcupine” Pat McKinney will lead hikes beginning at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. from the Kid Zone. The guided hikes are open to all ages and hikers will learn about local wildlife, plants and nature as they explore the reservoir’s trails.
The Tom Banditelli Sr. Memorial Trout Fishing Derby kicks off at noon. Registration begins at 8 a.m. There is a fee. The derby continues through Sept. 1.
Live music will be provided by Jason Kuhla from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Teacher and the Poet from 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Guided bike tours with DNA Bikes of Tamaqua will be held at 1 and 3 p.m., and Yoga With Jen gets underway at 3 p.m.
The Chamber is partnering with the Owl Creek Reservoir Commission and Explore Schuylkill for the event.
