Police: Man drove moped on Rt. 248, fled police

An Allentown man has been charged with fleeing officers on a moped between the Palmerton on-ramp and Route 248.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Alexander Rankovich of the Pennsylvania State Police, Lehighton barracks, in the case against Jeremis Salazar Rivera.

At 9:17 p.m. May 18, Rankovich was traveling eastbound on Route 248 when he saw three mopeds near the Palmerton exit, Palmerton.

Rankovich pulled his patrol vehicle ahead of the three mopeds and activated his emergency lights and sirens as he attempted to conduct a traffic stop by slowing his vehicle.

All three mopeds turned around and traveled west in the eastbound lane of Route 248.

Rankovich began to pursue the mopeds westbound in the eastbound lane, providing emergency lighting to warn eastbound traffic.

The mopeds passed four motor vehicles in the opposite direction.

As Rankovich caught up to the mopeds, he observed two of them taking the Palmerton on-ramp into Palmerton and observed one in the grass portion between the Palmerton on-ramp and Route 248 with two people by the moped.

Both the operator, Salazar Rivera, and passenger were detained. A query of Salazar/Rivera yielded an identification card and no valid motorcycle endorsement.

Strohl’s Towing arrived on scene and towed the involved moped.

Salazar Rivera faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude officer, driving the wrong way against the designated direction on a one-way roadway, drivers required to be licensed, careless driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid license for that class or type of vehicle. His passenger was released.

Salazar Rivera has been released on $75,000 straight bail, and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing June 11 before District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton.
