Crumbling railroad wall a concern

Another Palmerton property owner has raised concerns about an old railroad tie wall around their homes.

Resident Debbie Smith, of the 500 block of Mauch Chunk Road, told borough council on Thursday about the bank on Railroad Alley.

“The ties are all falling down,” said Smith, who added the trees also need to be trimmed. “We really need the bank to be shored up before (it) collapses.”

Council President Terry Costenbader said the borough was looking into the matter.

“We have to determine who owns that,” Costenbader said. “If somebody else owns it, we can’t do it.”

Janis Sylstra, who also resides in the 500 block of Mauch Chunk Road, told borough council last month that the old railroad tie wall is falling down.

Sylstra noted at that time that she had previously brought her concerns to council three years ago, and that she believes the wall is a huge safety issue.

Councilman Kris Hoffner said last month that he drove through Railroad Alley (behind Mauch Chunk Road), and agreed it’s bad.

Hoffner said at that time the borough needs to determine who owns it.

Costenbader assured Sylstra last month that once the borough determines who owns the wall, it would be addressed.

Sylstra also last month alluded to the speeding that goes on along Mauch Chunk Road, which she said is alarming when trying to pull out of Railroad Alley onto Mauch Chunk Road.
