A 40-year-old New Jersey man drowned trying to rescue two people from the water Sunday afternoon in Tobyhanna Township.
The Monroe County Coroner’s office said Bibin Michael of Norwood, New Jersey, was pronounced deceased on scene, at 3:35 p.m. Sunday after a water-related incident off Sir Bradford Road, Camelot Forest, Blakeslee.
Pocono Mountain Regional Police said they were called around 12:30 p.m. for several people in the water. Twenty people were staying at the long-term rental.
Police said two people were in a kayak supplied by the long-term rental. They were on the lake about 5 to 10 minutes when it got windy, causing the kayak to overturn. They were wearing life vests. They clung to the kayak and yelled for help. Bibin Michael jumped in to help.
Police said halfway between the shoreline and kayak, Bibin went down and did not resurface.
Rescue and dive teams were dispatched. A Pocono Mountain Regional officer with dive experience responded and recovered the body.
The coroner’s office said an autopsy will be scheduled.
Pocono Mountain Regional Police are conducting their investigation into the incident.
