Pleasant Vy. claims second straight D-11 3A girls lacrosse title

Pleasant Valley routs Nazareth to claim second straight District 11 Class 3A girls lacrosse title

BETHLEHEM – Devon Bush is in a race against time.

The good news for Bush and the Pleasant Valley Bears is that the more she scores, the more the team accomplishes — and the more the team accomplishes, the more time she has.

The senior entered Wednesday night’s District 11 Class 3A final with 380 career goals as she chases the 400-goal milestone. Bush left Lehigh University’s Frank Banko Field with 386, and helped add at least one more game to the Bears’ season, scoring six times in a 19-5 win over Nazareth that secured a second straight district championship.

The victory advances Pleasant Valley (20-2) to a play-in game against District 2 champion Delaware Valley for a spot in the PIAA tournament. That game is set for Friday at home.

Rylee Rath also scored six goals for the Bears, who were making their fourth consecutive appearance at Lehigh in pursuit of a district title. The familiarity with the field — and the pressure of a championship game — has made things easier.

“The first time I was here, I was nervous as anything,” said Olivia Iandoli. “But then I came out here tonight and was thinking about how it was my last night on this field, and I’m just going to give it my all and do it for the girls and do it for Toni.”

Iandoli was referring to head coach Toni Bush, who announced to her team that she would be stepping down when the season ends.

Pleasant Valley scored early and often to set the tone. Just 1:33 into the game, Iandoli netted the first of her two goals. Before the first quarter ended, Bush had two goals, while Rath, Morgan Ryals and Samantha Miller each added one to give the Bears a 6-1 advantage. Three of the first-quarter goals came off free-position shots, and Pleasant Valley finished 5-for-8 on free-position attempts.

“We came in and wanted to get off to a quick start,” said Devon Bush. “We know not to stress too much, or it will affect our play, so we came in with confidence.”

Rath, who reached the 300-goal milestone in the semifinals, scored three more times in the second quarter to bring her season total to 90. Nazareth added goals from both Kherington Smith and Keeley Kershner in the second, but still trailed 12-3 at halftime. Smith finished with a hat trick to close her sophomore season with 48 goals.

The Bears triggered the running clock with Rath’s goal just 1:09 into the third quarter, when she crossed in front of the net and slipped a shot past goalie Allison Aroche-Pelaez. That strike sparked a string of seven unanswered goals. By the time Bush capped the stretch with 5:43 remaining, Pleasant Valley led 19-3. Bush scored three of the team’s final four goals and assisted on the other — a finish by Ryals — to give her 56 assists this season, a school record.

Nazareth (15-5) added two late goals, including Smith’s final tally and a free-position goal by sophomore Morgan Koch with 1:43 to play.

Toni Bush helped launch the Pleasant Valley youth lacrosse program in 2010, and was named the school’s first varsity coach in 2016. Her exit will leave a void on the sidelines.

“It’s time,” said Bush. “I have some great assistant coaches who I think will step into important roles. I have every expectation that even though we are losing a tremendous group of seniors, we’ve built enough depth to be a contender next year.”

TAKE TWO ... Pleasant Valley and Delaware Valley also met in last year’s subregional play-in game, with the Bears advancing after a 20-4 win. The winner moves on to the PIAA tournament, while the loser sees its season come to an end.
