Jim Thorpe to honor namesake

Jim Thorpe is celebrating the 138th birthday of its namesake on Saturday.

The community celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Jim Thorpe Monument on North Street (Route 903) in Jim Thorpe.

The event honors the Native American and Olympic gold medalist Jim Thorpe, who was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation. He was the first Native American from the United States to win an Olympic gold medal.

The celebration will include a presentation of flowers by the Amateur Athletic Union at the Jim Thorpe mausoleum. A welcome will be given by Don Wild Eagle and the national anthem sung.

There also will be drum music by Medicine Horse Singers, hoop dance by Star Cloud, and a four winds morning smudge ceremony.

State Rep. Doyle Heffley will recite the State Declaration and comments will be given by the Carbon County commissioners, Jim Thorpe borough officials, and others.

The event is free and hosted by the Jim Thorpe Tourism Agency.
