Crusaders carnival opens to soggy weather
The conditions were wet and soggy, entertainment was canceled, and popular creatures weren’t out for public display.
And yet, the 19th annual Crusaders For a Cause spring carnival kicked off Thursday in the Palmerton Borough Park amid plenty of fanfare.
Noticeably absent was Apollo the Alligator, while The Dynamic Duo, Dave and Brenda Rehrig, had to be canceled, said Christina Obrecht, president of Crusaders For a Cause.
However, Obrecht noted that entertainment was expected to be on today’s docket, and was hopeful Apollo would be available for pictures for a small donation at Christina’s Reptile & Animal Sanctuary’s tent.
“We appreciate everybody braving the soggy grass,” Obrecht said. “We want people to come out and have fun.”
Carter Bellis, 4, of Palmerton, clearly had fun as he played various games at the carnival, including the Shark Tank.
His mother, Chelsea Bellis, said she loves the fact that the organization holds the event each year.
“He loves the rides, it’s very convenient,” Chelsea said. “It’s good for the kids, it’s something they are able to do, and it’s nice to have an event for kids to get out of the house.”
Scarlet Mertz stayed occupied with the Gold Fish Game.
“I like the Ferris wheel, and the car ride,” said Scarlet, 4, of Palmerton.
Scarlet’s father, Cole Mertz, said they make it a point to come out to the event each year.
The four-day event continues today from 5-11 p.m., 4-11 p.m. Saturday, and 2-7 p.m. Sunday.
The entertainment lineup is as follows: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Hall of Fame Roy Orbison tribute artist Terry Harris, 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Elvis Presley tribute artist, Jeff Krick Sr., and 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Roadhouse, with classic rock and blues.
Rides are provided by AEB Amusements with another wristband day on Sunday.
