Tamaqua OKs capital expenses
Tamaqua Area School Board on Tuesday approved a lengthy list of capital expenses totaling $750,000, including rebuilding the district’s tennis courts which carries a $250,000 price tag without drainage work.
“We have four courts, one of them we will not be able to play on as part of competition this fall, because a cracked opened itself back up,” Superintendent Ray Kinder said.
The district spent $50,000 on repairs a couple years ago, which only lasted about two years, he said.
“We’re at a point where we need to completely rebuild the tennis courts,” Kinder said.
The district obtained a price of $250,000 from an approved COSTAR vendor, and checked with local contractors who advised administrators to go with the quote from the vendor, he said.
The problem with the courts is there is no drainage, Ken Dunkelberger, chief operating officer, said, and the cost to add drainage was astronomical, coming in around $400,000.
The tennis courts will be ripped apart, a new foundation laid and the district will do work to divert water, Dunkelberger and Kinder explained.
The remaining capital projects, which total $500,000, also reflect needed maintenance and the replacement of aging technology and equipment.
All of the expenses or purchases, which will use COSTAR or equivalent vendors, were budgeted for and approved last year, Kinder told the board.
The board approved buying a Kubota UTV at a cost not to exceed $70,000. The district uses these vehicles to plow and remove snow, Kinder said.
The board also approved:
• The purchase of two Kifco Water Wheels for watering its fields and grounds at cost not to exceed $20,000.
• The purchase of three One Screen Touch Boards not to exceed $70,000. These are replacements of aging equipment.
• Refinishing the gymnasium and auditorium flooring at a cost not to exceed $60,000.
• Repairs and painting of the stadium bleachers not to exceed $60,000.
• Replacement of the high school garage doors at a cost not to exceed $30,000.
• Replacement of teacher Chromebooks at a cost not to exceed $50,000.
• Replacement of office staff computers not to exceed $40,000.
• Replacement of middle school entryway flooring not to exceed $100,000.
