Dugouts at Stoney Ridge field in poor condition

Dugouts at the Stoney Ridge Recreation Center in Lower Towamensing Township are in need of repair.

“The dugouts at Stoney Ridge Field are in pretty bad shape,” Supervisor Michael Takerer said last week. “The plywood is shot.”

Takerer said he knows a local contractor who would be willing to do the repair work to the dugout roofs (time and material) and to allow him to place his advertising at the playground.

However, township planning commission member Angela Farrell told Takerer that she believes doing so “would be opening up a can of worms.”

Supervisors then discussed allowing companies to place advertisements on the ball field fencing at Stoney Ridge Park, and they asked township secretary RoniSue Ahner to reach out to the ball association on how it handles the sponsorship at Alliance Field.

Last month, supervisors agreed to spend over $25,000 for improvements to the Stoney Ridge Recreation Center, with up to $12,900 on infield mix, as well as up to $12,900 for rubber mulch.

In March, supervisors reached an agreement with the Bowmanstown Palmerton Baseball Softball Association for use of the Stoney Ridge Recreation Center.

The building is now used as a recreation center at Stoney Ridge. Its 27 acres were sold to the township in 2001 by the Knights of Columbus.

The township and the association agreed to terms for park use from May 1 to Dec. 31.

The association must submit a facility request and game schedule by May 1 and give monthly updates. Use is limited to weekdays.

Softball, T-ball and baseball are allowed on the large baseball and T-ball fields.

The association is responsible for field maintenance, cleanup and trash disposal.

No park changes are allowed without township approval. The association must help prevent damage and follow safety rules.

Stoney Ridge Park remains open to the public and includes a basketball court and recreation hall.

The township will provide two port-a-johns; any extras must be paid for by the association.
