Bears win fourth straight EPC title

Pleasant Valley girls lacrosse team rolls to 19-1 victory over Emmaus in championship contest

NORTHAMPTON — The Pleasant Valley girls lacrosse team left no question about how good their team really is after the EPC title game was played Tuesday at Northampton High School.

The Bears flashed their talent from start to finish in a dominating 19-1 win over the Emmaus Green Hornets.

The victory marked their fourth consecutive Eastern Penn Conference championship.

Pleasant Valley took control of the match right from the opening draw by scoring five goals in the first eight minutes of action.

Brielle Halamar found the back of the net from a pass by Rylee Rath at 10:15. Less than a minute later, Morgan Ryals scored from a feed by Olivia Iandoli. Ryals scored again at 7:30 and with 5:40 left in the first period, she repeated the act with Iandoli to extend the lead to four.

Devon Bush, who added two goals and five assists to the scoring barrage, tallied the fifth goal with 1:40 to go in the first.

Ahead 5-0 after one, the Bears kept their foot on the gas pedal at the start of the second.

With just 56 seconds gone by, Iandoli scored and Halamar blistered the twine after a pass from Bush. Halamar scored again at 9:26 to make the score, 7-0.

PV coach Toni Bush had designed the perfect strategy for her team to finish their attacks.

“We expected Emmaus to defend us by setting up a zone to try to shut the door on us at the top,” said Coach Bush. “So, we attacked low and at the elbows of the goalie crease.

“This gave us good opportunities to work double cuts and score from down low.”

Before the halftime intermission, the Bears added to their totals.

Halamar finished off her hat trick at 9:26 before Rylee Rath slanted across the goal mouth to knock the ball home for her first of six goals.

Up 9-0, Rath scored again and Ryals beat the goalie for her second of five tallies with 16 seconds left before break for an 11-0 lead.

A significant key to PV’s explosive scoring was Rath winning the draw 14 times.

“Rylee was great on the draws and that put us immediately on the attacks,” said Coach Bush.

Besides their passing precision on offense, the Bears defense was also superb.

Twice, the Hornets moved the ball deep into PV territory and passed the ball around the circumference of the goal for nearly two minutes, but could not find an open lane to get off a shot.

“We were prepared for many scenarios, and we did very well to stop them from running their offensive sets,” said Coach Bush.

With the outcome of the game in little doubt and the mercy clock running, Pleasant Valley kept on pouring in the goals.

In the third period, Ryals put on an offensive display by scoring three straight times to make it 14-0. With a yellow card penalty on Emmaus, the Bears’ power play put home their 15th goal, this one by Samantha Miller.

In the fourth, Pleasant Valley lit up the scoreboard four more times on goals by Iandoli, Rath, Miller, and Ryals.

The lone goal for the Hornets was scored by Abby DiComes on a pass from Avery Aquino.

“Emmaus is a smart team,” said Coach Bush. “We knew it would be a physical game, but we kept our composure.

“We played a great team game with everyone contributing to our win.”

ANOTHER SMOTHER … The Bears’ defense has been by far the best in the league this season and Tuesday was yet another example. Emmaus was able to put only six shots on goal as PV smothered any chances for the Green Hornets to get clear shot lines on goalie Abigail Borger.

SIX MIX … Pleasant Valley had multiple goals from six different players, showcasing what will be a difficult attack to defend as it now prepares for the district tournament.
