‘Alice By Heart’ actor visits Tamaqua before show’s run
As the Tamaqua Area Drama Club put the finishing touches on its upcoming staging of “Alice By Heart,” an actor who starred in the Broadway run of the show stopped by to offer tips and support.
The visit from Andrew Kober, whose credits include movies, television and Broadway roles, came just days before the club’s Thursday through Saturday production of “Alice By Heart.”
“It’s been a very joyous thing that I do in between shows: traveling around and talking to students,” Kober said of the workshops.
Director Adriane Drum said Kober contacted the school after learning that the club would be performing the musical.
Drum jumped at the opportunity to host him, citing his impressive catalog of work.
On Broadway, he has been in “Beetlejuice,” “Les Miserables,” “She Loves Me,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” “School of Rock,” “Hair,” “Beautiful” and “How to Dance in Ohio.”
On television, he has appeared in “Law and Order,” “FBI: Most Wanted,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Pan Am,” “Blue Bloods” and “House of Cards.”
Kober is starring in “Gypsy” on Broadway but traveled to Tamaqua on a recent evening off.
“I grew up in Ohio, and I went to school in Pittsburgh,” Kober told the students. “So this is my part of the country. I love it here.”
After his introduction and a series of breathing exercises and interactive exercises, students performed 10-minute monologues, which Kober critiqued.
Among them was senior student Denny Krell, who has a lead role in “Alice By Heart” and will attend Penn State University to study musical theater.
“It’s an opportunity and a privilege for the entire cast to learn from his teachings, the way that he runs his career — and just how his mind works,” Krell said.
The club will perform “Alice By Heart” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the high school’s courtyard. In the event of rain, the production will be held in the district’s auditorium. Tickets are available at www.ticketleap.events/tickets/tamaquaareadramaclub/alice-by-heart.
The play is a touching one-act musical inspired by the book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”
According to the synopsis, “In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer’s budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland.
“As they travel through the tale, Alice by Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This beautiful musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times.”
“I’ve never been a fan of the original Alice in Wonderland; its strangeness frightened me when I was a child,” Drum said. “However, the use of the source material as inspiration for this beautiful musical is some of the most brilliant and compelling work I have ever seen.”
The lead roles will be played by Isabel Nallon and Krell, with support from Thomas Graham, Skora Ndikwiki, Cecilia Ulicny, Frank Wagner, Grant Johns, Christopher Smith, Corabel Najarro, Amelia MacDonald, Bradyn Brothers, Nick DeHaven, Destiny Steinmetz and Ava Vengen.
