Marshals nab suspect in body burning case

A Hazleton man sought by Hazleton police in the death of a Schuylkill County woman whose body was found burning along a road in Hazleton has been apprehended.

Hazleton police said Terrence Ray, 55, of Muir Avenue, was taken into custody without incident Thursday at 5:45 a.m. by officers of the U.S. Marshals Service and the state police Fugitive Apprehension Unit.

Ray was wanted on charges of criminal homicide, abuse of corpse and tampering with evidence in the death of 39-year-old Jessica Lockwood, who went missing April 26.

Her body was found the next day along Club 40 Road, just east of Route 93 near Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton, when firefighters responded to a report of a possible mannequin on fire.

Lockwood died from blunt force trauma and a gunshot wound. Investigators searched Ray’s home in the Height section of Hazleton and found a large pool of blood, evidence of an attempt to clean up and a gold earring that was missing from Lockwood’s body.

Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce said that Lockwood suffered from a substance abuse disorder following neck surgeries and was meeting Ray the day she went missing to obtain prescription pain medication.
