Pigs Column: Kemp stays hot

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs were on the road last week, making their second trip to Rochester in the first six weeks of the season.

Lehigh Valley went 4-2 against the Red Wings and return home this week to face the Worcester Red Sox, or the Woo Sox as their fans refer to them.

Let’s pull together some news, notes, and stats that you might have missed.

KEMP’S THE MAN … Otto Kemp has taken a lot of observers by surprise this season with his offensive output for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Never a highly-touted prospect, Kemp began to bloom last season and is showing some offensive abilities this year that are above what was expected. Plus, he can play just about anywhere on the field, which makes him a valued asset.

On Monday, Kemp picked up two honors. First, he was named the International League (IL) Player of the Month for April, and then took honors as the IL Player of the Week for the week that ended on Sunday.

Kemp slashed .330/.421/.711 for a 1.132 OPS in the month and in 25 games, accumulated 11 doubles, one triple, and eight homers, while driving in 24 runs. He also stole three bases and scored 23 times.

Along the way, the 25-year-old collected 10 multi-hit games, including two four-hit games. He set a career high with six RBIs on April 29 as he homered twice against Rochester. That came a week to the day after he was hit by a pitch four times, setting a new IronPigs franchise record.

For the week of April 28 through May 4, Kemp appeared in all six games the Pigs played against the Red Wings. In those six games, Kemp went 13-for-29 (.448) with a .500 OBP and .862 slugging for a 1.362 OPS. He had three doubles and three homers, driving in 14 runs while scoring eight times.

HITTIN’ SEASON … Technically, we still have some time to go before Charlie Manuel’s “hittin’ season” officially gets under way. However, the IronPigs offense was impressive and led the IL in runs (153) during April.

The Pigs also had the most total bases (375), highest OBP (.364), and second highest OPS (.800). The IronPigs tied for the league lead with Jacksonville with 19 wins last month.

PAINT THE VALLEY … Kids may anticipate the arrival of their birthday and Christmas, but fans have been awaiting the arrival of the Phillies top prospect, Andrew Painter, for some time now.

His development was delayed by Tommy John surgery, but he returned to the mound with Clearwater to open the season and is being skipped over both High-A Jersey Shore and Double-A Reading to come directly to Lehigh Valley.

Painter made four starts that covered 11 1/3 innings of work with one walk and 12 strikeouts to go with his 3.97 ERA at Clearwater.

He is scheduled for his Triple-A debut Thursday night against Worcester at Coca-Cola Park.

ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES … Right-hander Daniel Robert was acquired from the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor league pitcher Enrique Segura last week and was optioned to Lehigh Valley.

The 30-year-old Robert made his MLB debut last season, appearing in four games with Texas with a 3.18 ERA in 5 2/3 innings. This season, he posted a 1.54 ERA with Triple-A Round Rock in 10 relief appearances.

Outfielder Cal Stevenson will rejoin Lehigh Valley this week after being optioned to the Pigs when Brandon Marsh was activated over the weekend.

Lefty Nick Vespi was placed on the Development List, and righty Jose Cuas was released.

IN GOOD STANDING … Lehigh Valley (23-10) leads the IL East by a game over Durham (22-11). Jacksonville (21-12) stands two games behind with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Worcester both 16-16 this season and 6.5 games back.
