Nonprofits can apply for Jim Thorpe space
Carbon County nonprofit organizations interested in hosting a weeklong fundraiser in Josiah White Park in Jim Thorpe can now sign up for a spot through Sept. 30.
On Thursday, the board of commissioners provided an update to the new initiative that aims to help nonprofits in fundraising efforts by providing a vendor space in the county-owned park.
Commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko said that the county has opened up the opportunity through the end of September at this time and is still looking at what it will do in October, when thousands of people flock to the borough for the fall foliage festival, as well as to see the changing foliage that surrounds the area.
“It’s not that we’re not doing it in October, it’s just when you factor in October and all the fall foliage, it becomes a lot more that needs to be addressed,” Sofranko said. “In the essence of time and seeing what kind of interest there is out there, the commissioners felt that we (open) it to the end of September and then address concerns along the way so that we’re ready for October.”
The announcement on opening up the space to nonprofits was made two weeks ago, however, more information has now been posted on the Carbon County website.
The spot, which became available after one vendor chose to not renew their contract in the park, will be used on a rotating weekly basis for any nonprofit who would like to sign up for it.
The 10-foot by 10-foot spot availability begins June 1 and a nonprofit will have it from Monday through Sunday. No food trucks or trailers are permitted due to the size of the location that is being made available.
The county does have some specific requirements that nonprofits must include for use, including insurance requirements and a 501(c)3 designation.
