An Albrightsville man has been accused of stealing a car in Penn Forest Township and running from police after a chase According to state police at Fern Ridge, the incident began around 4:14 p.m. Sunday when troopers were called to a home on Byron Lane for a report of a stolen vehicle.
The owner said the vehicle, a blue Hyundai, was in the driveway running and unlocked.
The homeowners said their doorbell camera showed a man, later identified as Rayan Green, wearing a green/tan jacket and a black head-covering enter the vehicle at 4:02 p.m. and drive off.
They said that they recognized the man as a neighbor about four houses down but did not know his name.
Police contacted the family members of the suspect, later identified as Green, 27. They described the clothing worn by Green which matched the video surveillance.
Just after 5 p.m., state troopers saw the vehicle pass by them on Chippewa Trail.
Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop by activating their emergency lights and sirens, but the vehicle failed to stop and fled from troopers at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle lost control on a curve on W. Cherokee Trail and went down a small embankment.
Green got out of the vehicle and ran into the woods.
A Lehighton trooper saw a man matching the description walking on Route 534 still in Carbon County.
When Green saw him, he ran again into the woods.
Minutes later, another trooper spotted Green walking north on Route 534.
This time, Green stopped after being given multiple verbal commands and was arrested. He was still wearing the same clothes seen in the surveillance footage.
Green is facing several charges, including vehicle theft, fleeing police, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, and trying to escape.
He is being held at the Carbon County Correctional Facility on $50,000 straight bail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 14 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz in Jim Thorpe.
