JT Invite: Roth, Nelson, Nestor win gold
Three Times News area athletes, two from Northwestern, won their respective events at the annual Olympian Invite at Jim Thorpe High School on Thursday.
The Tigers received firsts from both Gavin Nelson and Rosalia Nestor, while Lehighton’s Joe Roth also captured gold.
Roth registered an area best this season in the javelin, posting a throw of 191-11. His distance easily topped runner-up AJ Formica of Pocono Mountain East (179-3).
Nelson, who cleared 6-10 earlier this season in the high jump to set an all-time area best mark, won the event at the Invite by clearing 6-8 — four inches better than second-place finisher Colin Steinhart of Shamokin.
Nestor, meanwhile, took the 1600 in the girls competition to give Northwestern a 1-2 finish. Nestor crossed in 5:18.05, with teammate Sophia Cornell taking second in 5:33.71.
The Tiger girls had a successful day, ending with seven top-three finishes.
In addition to Nestor and Cornell, Norah Silfies earned second in the high jump by clearing 4-10, while Sophia Schaffer placed third in the 100 in a time of 13.13. Schaffer also teamed with Madison Milks, Carsyn Van Norman and Taylor Langley to grab second in the 400 relay with a time of 50.80.
Nestor and Cornell joined Megan Fornwalt and Emily Kistler to post a 10:02.72 in the 3200 relay, good enough for second.
Marian had two of its athletes place second at the Invite. Olivia Thomas registered a 33-5 in the shot put for a runner-up finish, while Jacob Tom registered a 21-8 in the long jump to gain second.
Jim Thorpe’s Gavin Strohl gave the hometown fans something to cheer about by earning a third place in the discus with a throw of 140-5.
Also placing third was the Northwestern’s boys 3200 relay team of Brady Furman, Isaac Grubb, Weston Killar and Greyson Wellings. Their time was 8:57.19.
Athletes from 26 different schools participated in the event, which is a tune-up for next week’s league championships.
