Weatherly mayor resigns, sexual harassment alleged
Weatherly Mayor/Council President Paul J. Hadzick resigned Monday following an investigation into sexual harassment claims.
Prior to the mayor’s resignation, the borough became aware of allegations of sexual harassment made by four borough employees, the borough said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
The borough hired an independent, impartial law firm to conduct a thorough investigation. The results of that investigation were presented to council Monday during its executive session for personnel held after council’s monthly meeting.
Following the presentation, Hadzick resigned and council accepted the resignation.
Afterward, Hadzick posted about the investigation on his personal Facebook page, the borough’s statement said, pointing out that it does not condone the former mayor’s statements.
There have been no allegations of sexual abuse, the statement said, and the identities of the four complainants were not released. The results of the investigation are confidential, the borough said.
“The borough council condemns all forms of harassment, including sexual harassment. The borough further condemns any threats of retaliation on claims of harassment,” the statement reads.
The borough will not be making any further comments on specific details, it said in its statement.
Hadzick, who has served as mayor since 2020 after former Mayor Tom Connors chose not to seek reelection in 2019, could not be reached for comment. A former magisterial district judge, he ran unopposed in both 2019 and 2023.
Hadzick presided over district court in Weatherly, until his retirement, and later as a senior district judge in Luzerne County’s Central Court until 2009 when he was abruptly let go amid complaints.
He also has a long history of service to the borough and county, serving as supervisor of Eurana Park, treasurer and chief of the Weatherly Citizens Fire Co., a Weatherly Area School Board member and councilman before becoming a district judge in northern Carbon County in 1985.
Council hopes to fill the position of mayor at its next council meeting on May 27.
