Shankweiler’s Drive-In nominated for contest

Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre has been nominated for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice award for “Best Drive-In Theater” for the second consecutive year.

Located in Orefield, the theater placed fifth in the 2024 contest and is currently celebrating its 91st anniversary.

Shankweiler’s opened on April 15, 1934, becoming the second drive-in theater ever built. It now holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest continually operating drive-in theater in the world.

Owners Matthew McClanahan and Lauren McChesney, who purchased the theater in 2022, called the nomination an unexpected but welcome recognition.

“What an incredible surprise to be included in the running for 10Best again, on the eve of our historic anniversary,” McClanahan said. “Regardless of where we stand in the final vote, it’s a huge honor to have been nominated twice in our three years of ownership.”

The theater was also recently recognized by Variety magazine as one of the “Top 21 Coolest Theaters” in the world.

The USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards highlight national attractions and businesses, with public voting determining the winners. Participation is free and not influenced by advertising. Voting runs through 11:59 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 12.

Winners will be announced at noon Wednesday, May 21. For updates and showtimes, visit www.shankweilers.com.
