Local Roundup: Results from April 17

Northwestern captured wins in both baseball and softball on Thursday, while Lehighton had two first-place finishers at the Breslin Invitational and its softball team also picked up a victory.

BASEBALL

Northwestern-Kutztown

Northwestern had to hold off a late Kutztown rally to post a 13-10 non-league road win.

The Tigers built an 11-2 lead after five innings, but the Cougars staged a six-run seventh inning to fall just short.

Cannon Fitch carried the big bat for the Tigers, finishing 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, a walk, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Cole Dynda added three hits in four at-bats, as NW’s No. 3 hitter also scored a run and had two RBIs.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Tamaqua pushed its winning streak to four games thanks to a 3-1 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

The Blue Raiders remained in the hunt for the Schuylkill League Division 1 title, making the most of their hits to pull out the win.

Mason Ligenza connected for a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning for Tamaqua. Ligenza also pitched three scoreless innings, while Noah Mateyak tossed the final four frames and struck out eight.

Jake Yenser added a hit and an RBI, and Landon Kamant chipped in with a hit and a run.

Alan Kushwarra and Max Clews each had two hits for the Tide.

Palmerton-Salisbury

Salisbury took advantage of Palmerton’s miscues as the Falcons registered an 8-4 Colonial League victory.

Six errors, including three that occurred during a six-run third inning, came back to haunt the Bombers in a game played at Coca-Cola Field in Allentown.

Jason Carelli, the Bombers’ leadoff hitter, finished 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Luke Matsko (two singles) and Mason George (two singles, run scored, RBI) both chipped in with multiple hits for Palmerton.

Blue Mtn.-Panther Valley

Panther Valley’s Danny Wehr turned in an outstanding pitching effort, but was outdueled by Evan Setlock in a 2-0 Schuylkill League loss to Blue Mountain.

Wehr went the full seven innings, struck out 10, walked three, and allowed just six hits but was saddled with the loss.

Setlock tossed six and two-thirds inning of shutout baseball, fanning nine and walking one while scattering five hits.

Michael Mazzie had two singles to pace PV offensively.

Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

A nine-run opening inning got Nazareth off to a fast start, and the Blue Eagles went on to gain a 12-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Winning pitcher Landon Glovas and Chase Biedermann both had two hits and two RBIs for the winners. One of Biedermann’s hits was a two-run homer during the first.

The Bears received a hit and run scored from Jake Procita, while Ian Campbell’s sacrifice fly knocked in Owen Walters.

Lehighton-Palisades

John Light finished 4-for-4 for Lehighton, but the Indians dropped a 9-5 loss to Palisades in Colonial League action.

Light scored twice and also knocked in a run for the Tribe, whose three-run rally in the seventh was not enough to overcome a big deficit.

Derek Behler added three hits, including an RBI single and a two-run triple, while Aiden Solt chipped in with a single and an RBI.

For the Piartes, Jack Trickel finished with three hits and two runs. Mason Schultz also collected two hits and three RBIs.

Brayden Maksimik sparked the Blue Devils, with two singles, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Chase McCole (three singles, three runs, RBI) and Landon Monaghan (three single, run scored, RBI) both added multiple hits in the victory.

Bradlee Connors, Niko Saurez and Kolton Reiner accounted for the Wreckers’ three hits.

PM West-Lehighton

Lehighton broke a 5-5 tie against Pocono Mountain West with a two-run fifth inning, and put the game away with a five-run sixth to win 12-8 in non-league competition.

Eryn Mertz went 2-for-3 for the Indians with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Sophia Wise chipped in two RBIs and two runs scored during a 2-for-4 outing.

The Panthers received RBIs from five different players, including Kaylee Masotti with two.

Kutztown-Northwestern

Emma Freeman pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to lead Northwestern to a 5-2 non-league victory over Kutztown.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the first with an RBI-single from Abby Dunstan, and a sacrifice fly by Shelby Mitman.

The Cougars tied the game in the third, only for the Tigers to respond in the bottom frame on a two-run home run by Natalie Conner.

Dunstan sealed the game with a solo homer in the sixth.

Blue Mountain scored four runs in each of the third and fourth frames as part of a dominating 11-0 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

Emmerson Frie led the Eagles with four RBIs, while Courtney Cavadini also knocked in two runs.

Chloe Brown struck out 10 Panthers and only allowed two hits, plus chipped in with two RBIs at the plate.

PV’s hits came from Caroline Breslin and Morgan O’Brien.

Williams Valley used an eight-run third and a six-run fourth to shut out Marian 16-0 in Schuylkill League play.

Nine different Vikings produced RBIs, including Kayla Hand with four and Sage Smeltz with three.

Hand also blanked the Fillies on the mound with five strikeouts, and only allowed one walk and two hits.

The two Marian hits came from Malina Letcher and Danica Karlick.

Peyton Eckert threw a four-hit shutout, striking out five while only walking one to lead Pottsville to a 3-0 Schuylkill League win over Tamaqua.

The Tide broke the scoreless tie in the third on an RBI-double from Megan Yost and an RBI-single from Eckert.

An error in the fourth led to a third run, and Eckert shut the Raiders down the rest of the way.

Collecting hits for Tamaqua were Nico Conahan, Ceanna Gormley, Peyton Faust and Veronica Scott.

In a wild back-and-forth affair, Shenandoah Valley edged out Weatherly 12-10 in Schuylkill League action.

Zoey Zulkowski, Maria Castro and Kay Lynn Sheehan each had two RBIs for the Blue Devils.

Rachel Rosenlund knocked in two runs for the Wreckers, who scored three in the seventh but fell just short of coming back. Abby Weston added three runs, while Kiley Holman contributed a hit and a pair of runs.

Lehighton at

Breslin Invitational

Lehighton’s Brielle Frable and Emma Repsher both posted firsts at the annual Breslin Invitational.

Frable crossed the finish line first in the 1600 meters in a time of 5:27.75, while Repsher topped the field in the javelin with a throw of 128-1.

Frable also turned in a second-place performance in the 800 to help Lehighton tie for second in the team standings.

Other top-three finishers in the 16-team Invitational at Mount Carmel included Lilyanna Shapiro (2nd, 400), Lorah Thomas (3rd, discus) and Claudia Pagotto (3rd, 1600).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pleasant Valley-

Plymouth Whitemarsh

Plymouth Whitemarsh came back with nine second-half goals to erase a 9-2 deficit and defeat Pleasant Valley 11-10 in non-league competition.

Maite Jayo of the Colonials led all players in the game with eight goals.

Devon Bush and Rylee Rath each scored four goals for the Bears, while Bush also added three assists.
