‘Masked Reader’ comes to Panther Vy.

You’ve likely heard or “The Masked Singer” on TV.

Panther Valley Elementary School staged an offshoot which it called “The Masked Reader,” which was as entertaining, captivating, creative and possessed the same mystique.

The Masked Reader consisted of fully costumed characters who read books to elementary students during Read Across America Week. Students tried to guess who was behind the colorful, amusing outfits with a vote on a Google pie chart.

The unveiling of the four masked readers occurred during an assembly program at the school on Friday.

The Masked Readers were:

• School nurse Christine Kustecky, wearing a dinosaur costume. She read “How Do Dinosaurs Go To School” to the classes on Day One of Read Across America Week.

• “Coach” Dennis DiCarlo, elementary gym teacher, disguised as a shark danced vigorously to the “Baby Shark” tune as he entered the room and then unmasked. He had read the book “Five Little Sharks Swimming in the Sea.”

• School Counselor Danielle Bales was an animated Easter bunny. On Day 3 of Read Across America Week, she read the book “How To Catch The Easter Bunny.”

• Superintendent of School David McAndrew caught the students off-guard as one of the guest readers. He wore a leprechaun suit and read the book “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Clover.” He did a type of Irish jig as he appeared for the unmasking.

The clever concept of The Masked Reader was by reading teacher Amber McFadden.

Each day, McFadden videotaped the readings. The students were then told to guess who the mystery reader was via a Google pie chart that compiled the votes.

McAndrew stumped the students the most, with only 6.7 percent of the children picking him.

“The students tried to guess all week,” McFadden said. “It made them excited to listen to the story and made them want to read. Even the teachers didn’t know who the masked readers were.”

In conjunction with the unmaskings, McFadden staged a “book character day.”

The teachers dressed as characters from various books. McFadden was attired as a mouse, such as the one from the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.”

It was obvious the students enjoyed the unveiling of the characters, as they cheered and laughed loudly as each appeared.

Introduced to the students during the assembly program was the Elementary School’s new Dean of Students Richard Evanko.

The emcee was elementary principal Paula Jones.
