Lehighton hears request for apartments downtown

Several apartments could be on their way to downtown Lehighton.

Rigoberto Ramirez, an investor with Ramirez Properties Lehighton, told borough council on Monday he wants to build four apartments at the building at 121 S. First St.

The building, located next to the Lehighton Elderly Apartments, houses The Smokers Club on the bottom level. The apartments would be on the top level.

Ramirez, who was joined by Jesse Roldan, a commercial loan broker with Biz Hub Financial in Allentown, discussed parking spots for apartment and said there is plenty of parking on the street.

Borough solicitor Jim Nanovic told Ramirez he should apply first with the borough’s zoning department, as zoning does typically have requirements for parking.

Ramirez said it appears as if the structure has previously served as an apartment building, and wanted to see if he could be grandfathered into apartments.

He said they would like to be able to build in Carbon County to see the area continue to grow.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky said the borough wants to see its buildings occupied.

“We want the downtown to thrive,” Abelovsky said. “We want the buildings to be filled.”

Nanovic then told them to start with the borough’s zoning officer.
